What PTE Core Score Do You Need for Express Entry?

For the Federal Skilled Worker Program and the Canadian Experience Class at TEER 0 or 1, you need CLB 7 in all four abilities, which on PTE Core means at least 60 in Listening, 60 in Reading, 68 in Speaking and 69 in Writing. Those are minimums for eligibility, not targets. Every ability is checked on its own, so a single skill below the line disqualifies the profile no matter how high the other three are.

Minimum PTE Core scores by Express Entry program

Each federal program sets its own CLB floor. The table below converts those floors into the PTE Core score you need in each skill, using IRCC's published equivalency chart.

If you are also claiming points for a second official language, the Federal Skilled Worker Program asks for CLB 5 in all four abilities in that language.

Your weakest skill decides your eligibility

This is the rule that surprises the most candidates. IRCC does not average your four PTE Core scores and it does not look at an overall number. It checks Listening, Reading, Speaking and Writing separately against the program minimum. A candidate with 85, 84, 86 and 66 has three abilities at CLB 9 and one at CLB 6, and does not meet the CLB 7 requirement for the Federal Skilled Worker Program.

The practical consequence is that study time is worth far more in your weakest skill than in your strongest. Pushing an 85 to a 90 changes nothing about eligibility. Pushing a 66 to a 69 changes everything.

What each CLB level is worth in CRS points

Meeting the minimum gets you into the pool. Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) points decide whether you get an invitation. Language is one of the largest levers on the CRS, and unlike eligibility, CRS points are awarded per ability, so each skill earns its own points at its own level.

Read the two big jumps in that table. Moving an ability from CLB 6 to CLB 7 is worth 8 extra points, and moving it from CLB 8 to CLB 9 is worth another 8. Across all four abilities, going from CLB 7 to CLB 9 is worth 56 CRS points for a single applicant. In most recent draws that is a larger margin than the gap between the cut off and where a typical profile sits.

The CLB 9 bonus most candidates miss

Language points are not the end of it. The CRS also awards skill transferability points that combine your language level with your education and your foreign work experience, and the thresholds sit exactly at CLB 7 and CLB 9. Crossing CLB 9 in all four abilities doubles these.

Note the phrasing in the middle column: one ability below CLB 9 drops you out of the right hand column entirely. Skill transferability is capped at 100 points in total, and each section within it has its own ceiling, so you cannot simply add every row together.

A worked example: what CLB 7 to CLB 9 is actually worth

Take a single applicant with a master's degree and four years of foreign work experience, currently sitting at CLB 7 in all four abilities.

• Language points rise from 68 to 124, a gain of 56.
• Education combined with language rises from 25 to 50, a gain of 25.
• Foreign work experience combined with language rises from 25 to 50, a gain of 25.

That is up to 106 CRS points from one better test result, subject to the 100 point cap on skill transferability. In PTE Core terms, the work is moving Listening from 60 to 82, Reading from 60 to 78, Speaking from 68 to 84 and Writing from 69 to 88. Not trivial, but far cheaper than most other ways of finding 100 CRS points.

Which PTE Core tasks move which score

Because several PTE Core tasks are integrated, one response can feed two of the four skills at once, so targeted practice moves more than one row of the tables above. Read Aloud counts toward Speaking and Reading. Answer Short Question counts toward Speaking and Listening. Summarize Written Text counts toward Reading and Writing. Summarize Spoken Text and Write from Dictation both count toward Listening and Writing.

Before you rely on these numbers

The CLB conversions here come from IRCC's published language test equivalency chart and the CRS point values from IRCC's Comprehensive Ranking System grid, both current as of September 2026. IRCC updates both, and program minimums and draw cut offs change independently of each other. Confirm the current figures on the official IRCC language test page before you submit anything. Your PTE Core score must also still be valid, meaning less than two years old, on the day IRCC receives your permanent residence application, not just when you create your profile.
