PTE Core for Canadian Citizenship: The Score You Need

PTE Core is accepted for Canadian citizenship. If you are aged 18 to 54, IRCC asks for proof that you can speak and listen at Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB) 4 or higher, and for PTE Core that means a score of 28 or higher in Listening and 42 or higher in Speaking. Reading and Writing are not assessed. IRCC also accepts test results that have expired, so the PTE Core score you used for permanent residence will often be enough on its own.

What PTE Core score do you need for citizenship?

Two scores matter, and both must clear the line. Everything else on your Score Report is ignored for this purpose.

The two numbers are not the same because PTE Core's 10 to 90 scale maps onto CLB levels differently for each skill. A 42 is the bottom of the CLB 4 band for Speaking, while Listening reaches CLB 4 at 28. Our PTE Core score to CLB conversion chart shows every band side by side.

How does the citizenship requirement compare with Express Entry?

The citizenship bar is much lower and much narrower than the one you cleared for permanent residence. That is why most people who immigrated through an economic program already hold a score that qualifies.

Can you use expired PTE Core results?

Yes. IRCC's citizenship instructions tell applicants to include a copy of their test results even if they are expired. This is the single biggest difference from the immigration side, where a Score Report older than two years gets an application refused.

In practice this means the PTE Core test you took for your Express Entry profile can usually be reused years later. IRCC asks directly whether you submitted language test results when you applied for permanent residence, and if those results meet the citizenship minimums, you include them and move on.

Who has to prove language ability?

Applicants aged 18 to 54 on the date they sign the application. If you are 55 or older, or under 18, you do not submit language proof. Age is counted on the signing date, not on the date IRCC receives or processes the file.

What if you do not have test results?

You have two options. The first is education: IRCC accepts diplomas, transcripts or certificates from a secondary or post-secondary program completed in English or French, and lists further accepted proof on its language requirements pages. The second is to sit a test now.

If you take PTE Core for citizenship, know what you are aiming at. You only need Listening and Speaking, but the test still assesses all four skills in a single two hour sitting, and several tasks score two skills at once. How should you prepare if Speaking is your weak skill?

Speaking has the higher bar of the two, and it is the one people miss. PTE Core Speaking is machine scored, so fluency and pronunciation carry real weight alongside content. Long pauses, restarts and trailing off lose points even when your English is correct.

• Practise out loud, into a microphone. Reading answers in your head does not train the fluency the scoring engine listens for.
• Keep talking to the end of the response window. A steady, even pace beats a fast start followed by silence.
